Antibiotics deliver a gut punch to infant immunity
Brian D. Rudd
Department of Microbiology & Immunology, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, USAThe development of the immune system is known to be shaped by the microbiota and their metabolites, yet the key players are poorly understood. Stevens and colleagues now show that microbiota-derived inosine is an important regulator of CD8+ T cell immunity in early life, opening up new therapeutic opportunities to protect infants from severe viral infections.
