ZBP1 links infections to cancer immunotherapy

1Cancer Signaling and Microenvironment Program, Fox Chase Cancer Center, Philadelphia, PA, USAZ-DNA binding protein 1 (ZBP1) was thought to initiate necroptotic cell death in response to viral Z-RNA molecules. Recent data demonstrate that viral infection causes the accrual of endogenous Z-RNA species that are sufficient for ZBP1-driven necroptosis, opening the road to therapeutic strategies aimed at maximizing the immunogenicity of cancer cell death via necroptosis.
