Gut serotonin regulates Kupffer cell appetite for drug carriers
Peter A. A. Norris , Lili Zhai , Paul Kubes
Department of Biomedical and Molecular Sciences, Queen’s University, Kingston, ON, CanadaIn a recent issue of Science, Wang et al. used mouse models to reveal a gut-liver immune axis where gut epithelium-derived serotonin increases liver Kupffer cell (KC) scavenging activity. This serotonin effect promotes the rapid clearance of various in vivo delivery systems (IDSs), limiting their effectiveness.
