The discovery of the PIEZO force-sensing ion channels was an important advance in recent years, leading to exciting new knowledge and fields of inquiry. An interesting article published by Sugisawa et al. in Cell unexpectedly suggests PIEZO1 channels as RNA rather than force sensors in enterochromaffin cells, with important implications for microbiome response and gut motility mediated by 5-HT.
