Optogenetic control of the Ca 2+ signaling machinery has been a powerful approach but requires complex cell manipulation to introduce modified genes. A newly developed non-invasive, ultrafast laser technique allows for the remote activation of native Orai1 Ca 2+ channels, without the need for gene introduction, protein expression, or exogenous reagents.
