Muscularis macrophages: trained guardians of enteric neurons
Maria Francesca Viola , Guy Boeckxstaens*
Center of Intestinal Neuro-Immune Interaction, Translational Research Center for Gastrointestinal Disorders (TARGID), KU Leuven, 3000 Leuven, BelgiumAn intestinal helminth infection induces a tolerogenic phenotype of resident muscularis macrophages protecting the enteric nervous system against subsequent bacterial infections, an effect mediated by eosinophil-derived IL-4 and IL-13. This work further identifies muscularis macrophages as important players protecting the enteric nervous system against harmful events.
