Induction of ferroptosis, a form of non-apoptotic cell death caused by phospholipid peroxidation and consequent plasma membrane rupture, has been explored as a potential strategy for cancer therapy. In a recent paper published in Cell ResearchQiu et al. report that promoting mitochondria-associated cGAS (cyclic GMP-AMP synthase) signal can block ferroptosis to support cancer progression independently of downstream activation of signaling adapter STING (stimulator of interferon genes).
