Peripheral cancer remodeling of central neural system
Gray Umbach , Shawn L. Hervey-Jumper*
Department of Neurological Surgery, University of California, San Francisco, San Francisco, CA, USARecent work in the field of cancer neuroscience has demonstrated bidirectional interactions between neurons and cancer cells ultimately influencing neural circuit function, tumor growth, and patient survival. In a recent paper published in Cell Research, Xu et al. take a novel approach, identifying a secretory factor-induced central nervous system-mediated increase in peripheral autonomic sympathetic activity that drives tumor–immune cell interactions and tumor progression across multiple cancer types.
