The tms5 mutation exists in most current thermo-sensitive genic male sterility lines, which are essential in hybrid rice production. The Cao group has made an exciting new discovery: TMS5, as a phosphatase, removes 2′,3′-cyclic phosphate (cP) from cP-ΔCCA-tRNAs, enabling efficient tRNA repair.
