The KCNQ1 potassium channel plays important roles in many physiological systems, such as heart beating and hearing. Here in two articles in Cell Research, Cui et al. and Zhong et al. present structures of KCNQ1 in the presence of the important KCNE1 subunit and PIP2 to show structural rearrangements induced by KCNE1 and that KCNQ1 requires two bound PIP2 molecules per subunit to open.
